Discover how creative expression enhances well-being!
Loneliness is a growing public health crisis impacting over half of Americans, impairing mental and physical health and sapping our vitality and resilience—but there’s a creative way forward! Art-making and creative expression offer innovative and unique ways to help us reconnect to ourselves and others.
Join loneliness expert and author Jeremy Nobel, MD, MPH, President of The Foundation for Art & Healing and faculty member of Harvard Medical School, along with Boston Public Library President David Leonard for an intriguing conversation as they unpack the complexities of loneliness, revealing how the arts engage, inspire, and connect, helping us all become “UnLonely.”

David Leonard is President of the Boston Public Library. During his 15-year tenure with BPL, David has also served as Director of Administration & Technology, Chief Technology Officer, acting Director of Administration & Finance, and acting Chief Financial Officer.

Not only was Dr. Nobel’s keynote address well received but it resonated with participants so much they are still talking about it. Attendees became aware that his simple, impactful research-based message to reduce loneliness by getting curious, making something, and having a conversation was something they all could do.
Everyone has an opportunity to make others feel connected. Dr. Nobel's presentation and workshop helped our group understand tangible ways in which we can create community and build connections on an individual and organizational level. We were amazed with how people participating in the art project were willing to be vulnerable and share with each other. It was a lightbulb moment for many realizing how art can help create connections.
Dr. Nobel’s presentation to public library leaders at our Urban Libraries Council national conference was transformative, addressing the impact of loneliness on librarians, patrons, and the wider community. His insights on loneliness, heartfelt approach and actionable strategies resonated deeply, and the interactive creative expression workshop during his keynote allowed library leaders to immediately put their new knowledge into practice. Attendees left inspired and better equipped to foster social connection through their work.
Supportive and clear-eyed, Project UnLonely unpacks our personal and national experience of loneliness to discover its roots and take steps toward comfort and connection. Dr. Nobel weaves together insights from leaders in healthcare, business, education, and the arts to reveal the important role creativity can play in the healing process.
